Trader Joe’s is expanding its national footprint in 2026, with new store openings planned across a dozen U.S. states.
The planned expansion spans California, Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Louisiana, Utah, Florida, Massachusetts, Kansas, Arizona, Georgia and New York, according to trade publication Grocery Dive.
A Trader Joe’s spokesperson told website Grocery Dive that the grocer planned to open more than 20 stores in 2026. The chain opened 34 stores in 2024 and 43 stores in 2025.

Trader Joe’s announced at the end of last month that it was opening eight new stores—including in Paso Robles and Anaheim Hills, California; Spokane Valley and Seattle, Washington; Oswego, Illinois; West Orange, New Jersey; Lafayette, Louisiana; as well as Herriman, Utah.
Shortly before that, the chain announced it would open two new stores in Massachusetts—one in Orlando and another in Reading.
In February, Trader Joe’s had announced scheduled openings of seven stores, including in Merriam, Kansas; Mandeville, Louisiana; West Palm Beach, Florida; Tucson, Arizona; Woodinville, Washington; New Orleans; as well as Johns Creek, Georgia.
Meanwhile, two new stores have already opened this year—in Miller Place, New York, and in Hamden, Connecticut.
All of these states already have Trader Joe’s stores, according to Grocery Dive, meaning the company is just growing its presence.
Trader Joe’s is known for its affordable, mostly private-label products and distinctive, neighborhood-style shopping experience. The company was founded by Joe Coulombe, who opened the first store under the Trader Joe’s name in Pasadena, California, in 1967.
