There are more pressing issues than the government’s failed pursuit of hosting next year’s COP climate summit, Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie has said, as she encourages Labor to drop net zero by 2050 targets.

“Sanity prevails, finally, under the Albanese government. I think Australians would have taken incredibly dim view of taxpayers money, $2 billion as I understand, the bill would have been to host a global climate change festival in Adelaide,” McKenzie told Sky News this morning.

“Meanwhile, power bills were skyrocketing here at home, and the impact of Labor’s net zero ideology is being felt in every household, every business and in every regional community. So, you know I think they finally woke up,” she said.

McKenzie said the government’s pursuit of net zero by 2050 targets, which the Coalition has dumped, is not in line with global efforts. She said the government should join the opposition in backing away from the target.

“I think the Labor Party will eventually adopt the position that the National Party and now the Liberal Party have taken on this issue, because it is in the national interest to not send our country broke and to stay a powerful, rich, prosperous and sustainable country by having a plan that brings power prices down, but also can lower emissions over time,” McKenzie said.
