We are only a few short days away from the Final Four in Indianapolis, and one of the most talked-about teams in college basketball at the moment won’t be anywhere near the state of Indiana when the national semifinals kick off.
The North Carolina Tar Heels are in the spotlight during a time when they should be anything but, following another first round exit from the men’s NCAA Division I basketball tournament.
But following the dismissal of Hubert Davis, one of the most prestigious jobs in all of college sports (football or basketball) has opened up, and it’s even taking over the teams playing in the Final Four.
Both Arizona Wildcats and Michigan Wolverines head coaches Tommy Lloyd and Dusty May, respectively, are seen as favorites to land the UNC job even while they’re preparing for the biggest games of their careers on Saturday against one another.
They aren’t the only big names rising in the conversation; NBA coaches are in the mix as well. Chicago Bulls lead man Billy Donovan might be reminiscing about his days as the Florida Gators head coach and return to college following a disappointing tenure with the Bulls.
Another name quickly rising up the oddsmakers’ sheets is an NBA coach with direct ties to Chapel Hill.

Golden State Warriors assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse has seen his odds of becoming the next UNC head coach improve, per Kalshi, a prediction website.
Stackhouse was an All-American while playing for the Tar Heels and was considered one of the best players to wear the team’s jersey during his two-year stint before going to the NBA.
While he’s an assistant now, he is no stranger to the college basketball world, having been the head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores. He was named SEC Head Coach of the Year during the 2022-23 season.
After Donovan, Lloyd, and May, Stackhouse is now the fourth-most-likely candidate to get the Tar Heels job on Kalshi.
