The Minnesota Vikings suffered a disappointing loss in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland. For the second straight week, Carson Wentz received the start at quarterback as J.J. McCarthy continues recovering from a rough ankle injury.

McCarthy’s status for Week 5 against the Cleveland Browns in London remains to be seen. However, the Vikings have had hope that he could be available for the matchup.

Only time will tell, but a new update has been shared about the young signal caller.

Bears Legend Delivers Strong Words About Caleb Williams

As shared by the team’s official X account, the hope remains that McCarthy will return to practice this week ahead of the Browns game. The team also gave other injury updates in the post.

“Head Coach Kevin O’Connell announced earlier today that T Brian O’Neill suffered an MCL sprain and will be week-to-week. He will not be placed on IR,” the post read. “OLB Andrew Van Ginkel will not practice this week and the hope is that J.J. McCarthy practices some this week.”

Obviously, there is good and bad news in that update. O’Neill being week-to-week and being placed on IR is bad news. Van Ginkel not practicing also isn’t good news. But, the update on McCarthy brings a positive amid the negative.

Prior to the injury, McCarthy played in the Vikings’ first two games of the season. He led the team to a 1-1 record in those outings.

As for his production, McCarthy completed 58.5 percent of his pass attempts for 301 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also ran for 50 yards and a score on the ground.

There is still a lot of work for the young quarterback to do in order to become a legitimate franchise quarterback. McCarthy has shown some good flashes, but like most young players has also had some bad moments. In the meantime, Minnesota is facing what could be a tough decision on whether or not to start McCarthy or to keep Wentz on the field.

More updates are sure to come out about McCarthy’s status as the week progresses on. For now, it sounds like he should be back on the practice field at some point this week, which will have head coach Kevin O’Connell needing to make a quarterback decision by Sunday morning.
