The Minnesota Vikings are currently taking things slow with young quarterback J.J. McCarthy. The second-year passer suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 2 and has missed Weeks 3 and 4 due to the injury.

O’Connell spoke to reporters on Wednesday about McCarthy’s recovery and also provided a small timeline update on when he may return to the field.

“J.J. is working his way back and is entering the next phase of his rehab where he can get a little more active. Looking forward to getting him back on the field practicing with the team as soon as we can. But at the same time, we want to be smart and let that high ankle fully heal, and then he can really start attacking it. Working on his technique and fundamentals and getting reacclimated, which I think he will do very quickly,” O’Connell said.

It was already established that McCarthy could miss anywhere between two and six weeks due to the high ankle sprain, and it appears that O’Connell has revealed that the young quarterback has some more healing time. McCarthy has yet to return to practice and has already missed two weeks, so it might be Carson Wentz running the offense for the next couple of games.

McCarthy pulled off a fantastic fourth-quarter comeback against the Chicago Bears, but the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 were all over him. After multiple sacks and hits, he suffered a high ankle sprain that is now keeping him sidelined.

The Vikings are currently 2-2 on the season, and McCarthy could return to provide a spark on the offense. However, he will need to compltely heal before that can happen, and it sounds like O’Connell will keep him sidelined for a longer duration.
