A teen has shared their frustration after receiving two fail marks on what seemed to be a straightforward English spelling test.

The marks, attributed to a misheard word and a perplexing grading decision, left the student baffled. Sharing a snapshot of the test on Reddit in May, the student from Israel, who wished to remain anonymous, showed the unexpected spelling section of their English test that caught them off guard.

“There wasn’t supposed to be a spelling section on the test. I was surprised when we had one, and it wasn’t related to the rest of the test, the material, or anything else,” the teen told Newsweek.

The frustration peaked with two words: “absence” and “tongue.” While the student accepted they misheard the word “absence” as “accents,” resulting in a misspelling, the real frustration came with the final word.

The word “tongue,” which the student spelled correctly on the test, was marked wrong, leaving them confused and frustrated.

It seemed that the handwriting had thrown off the teacher who may have mistaken the “n” for a “u,” but the student was confused and shared what happened on Reddit’s r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit.

“When I got the test back, I said out loud, ‘You seein’ this s***?'” said the student. “I posted on Reddit because, immediately after going through the test, I thought of the subreddit r/mildlyinfuriating and knew it would be a hit.”

The English test annoyance quickly gained traction, with 23,000 upvotes and more than 1,000 comments as Reddit users shared their thoughts.

“I hated when my teachers did this, like you know DAMN WELL that’s an n,” wrote Moth-slurping-lamps.

TheHorizonLies posted that the issue lay with the student’s handwriting: “Your lowercase n in tongue looks like a u. Work on your penmanship and you’ll get full points.”

Others were prompted to share their own tales of testing woes.

“Back in like third grade, I heard ‘quarter’ on a spelling test, and spelled it correctly,” commented zrice03. “But it was actually supposed to be ‘water’ and was marked wrong. I swear the teacher pronounced it weird on purpose…still salty about it to this day.”

Emmetalbenny posted: “Man, elementary school me lost a spelling bee because the judges wouldn’t say the word clearly, so I spelled something else entirely. Ironically the word was ‘incomprehensible’.”

This isn’t the first time a teacher’s correction of a spelling has gained viral attention. Earlier this year, internet users were stunned when a teacher incorrectly changed a spelling on a student’s homework. And, in 2022, a fiftn-grade homework question left people stumped, prompting the parent to contact the math teacher for the answer.
