The autumnal or fall equinox arrives on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 2:19 P.M. EDT, bringing with it the sound of dead leaves, the rich rot of pumpkin spice and the distant echo of frost.

What is the autumn equinox?

An equinox occurs when the sun crosses the equator. The term combines the Latin word aequi, meaning “equal,” with nox, meaning “night,” as on this day of days, the hours of light and darkness are equal.

Astrologically speaking, the fall equinox ushers in the people-pleasing, balance-seeking, beauty-venerating energy of Libra season

When is the first day of fall?

This year, the first day of fall falls on September 22, 2025.

Equinox Fall 2025

“The shift from summer to autumn is always a jarring experience for those sensitive to change,” astrologer Babs Cheung told The Post.

Alongside temperatures dropping and daylight waning, Cheung shared that our mindsets also alter around the fall equinox.

“Themes related to independence and interdependence will show up. “I’ll just do it myself” mentality quickly turns into “Now I have to deal with people, compromise and relationships.”

What does the fall equinox symbolize

This move from DIY to playing nice with others is mirrored in the astrological shift from Virgo to Libra.

“Virgo rules over the 6th house of everyday routines and habits, while Libra rules over the 7th house of partnerships. The focus from fixing your own problems to talking it out with a collaborator can be plenty disorienting, but when you think about it from a seasonal perspective, it makes sense: Fall is known for harvest, and many hands make light work,” said Cheung.

“You’ve been in ‘DIY’ mode since the spring equinox, Aries, but fall asks you to make room for someone else,” said Cheung.

She shared that on the precipice of the dark half of the year, relationships become “the mirrors you can’t avoid, reflecting the parts of you you’d rather ignore.”

Let what you see guide who you choose to be — and be with.

“You may have planned your routines down to the minute, but as soon as you incorporate another, those plans fall apart, Taurus,” said Cheung,

“The best advice? Merge calendars to ensure everyone is on the same page. If you want to take it a step further, adopt the love language of Google Cal invites — for the least amount of head and heartache.”

“Your solo summer side quests were fun, but now the equinox is adding another person to your party, giving you double the pleasure, Gemini.”

Cheung shared that the joy of adventure and the dopamine of discovery are amplified for Gems through partnership, collaboration, or romance this season.

“Expect laughter, sparks, and the sweet realization that when you share your curiosity, it expands your horizons.”

“Through careful curation and self-containment, you’ve built yourself a sweet little nest, Cancer, but the equinox reminds you that home is a shared communal experience,” shared Cheung.

She notes that the influence and external pressure of family dynamics, roommates, or partners may require compromise from the crab contingent.

“While welcoming others into your space may feel uncomfortable and disruptive, your future self will thank you for being able to create harmony during the pre-holiday season.”

The fall equinox is a summons to Leos to shift their focus to their community and supporters. For lions, Libra season activates their third house of communication, emphasizing the importance of sharing ideas and engaging in dialogue with key players and trusted allies.

“Information is power, but you can’t be a good leader or get your ideas executed without empowering your team.”

“I’ve got great news, Virgo,” said Cheung, “The equinox and Libra season activate your 2nd house of worth, you get to make lists (yay, lists!) of all your resources and where they are being spent since the vernal equinox.”

She urges Virgos to assess how their priorities may have shifted since spring and, in accordance, change where and to whom they allocate their time.

“Be picky, I’m sure I don’t have to tell you twice.”

“It’s your season, Libra, and the equinox gives you a literal and metaphorical glow up, but it comes with admirers and people pulling your energy in all directions,” cautions Cheung.

She advises the people of the scales to put themselves first rather than obeying their natural inclination to prioritize the needs and preferences of others.

“You can start with planning the birthday that you want, not the one that people expect of you. If that’s too harsh, consider spending a day before doing whatever you want, just so that you can reclaim time for yourself before the celebration.”

According to Cheung, “This is not the season for solo problem-solving but rather the season of guided introspection, Scorpio. Partnering with a therapist, coach, or trusted person can help you untangle recurring patterns, release baggage, and integrate lessons that have been simmering since the vernal equinox.”

She shared that if scorpions can exorcise old energy here and now, they can create space for healthier boundaries, modalities, and relationships that will continue to bear fruit in the cold to come.

“Social fatigue is real, and if you’re not careful this equinox, you may experience it fully, Sagittarius,” said Cheung.

She notes that for archers, Libra season activates their 11th house of friends and collaborators.

“Suddenly, everyone wants a piece of your social calendar. To eliminate double booking, take a page from Taurus and adopt the love language of calendar invites. It’ll save you and your fun club from unnecessary hurt feelings.”

“During Libra season, your career takes center stage, Capricorn. To make it to the top with the least amount of enemies and resenters hoping to see you fall, your weapon to master is diplomacy,” said Cheung.

She shared that career advancement requires strategic moves, strong allies, and building, rather than burning bridges. “You never know which connection might open the next door, so it’s best practice to temper ambition with tact.”

Astrology 101: Your guide to the stars

“Your thirst for knowledge and expansion has always been one of your priorities, but when the fall equinox arrives, you’ll feel the urge to get a study buddy, mentor, or tutor to really hone your skills, Aquarius,” shared Cheung.

She notes that the company of others clarifies complex concepts.

“When you share the load, ideas are sharpened through debate, and you test theories with a peer. They say you never really know anything until you teach it to someone else, and this fall you’ll get to share your knowledge with someone just as passionate.”

“This is a tricky time for you, Pisces, as the equinox shines a light on intimacy, shared resources, and boundaries,” said Cheung.

She shared that the people of the fish are gifted an opportunity during Libra season to strike the delicate balance of trusting others without completely ceding control.

“Pay attention to your financial, emotional, and energetic resources while navigating collaborations, joint projects, or romantic relationships. When unsure, remember that healthy sharing strengthens your connections, but careless merging will leave you depleted.”
