A 19-year-old hiker was impaled on a stick or a branch after falling 10 metres on one of the Gold Coast’s most challenging bushwalking tracks yesterday afternoon.

The teenager was tackling the Pinnacle walking track, also known as Pages Pinnacle, when he plunged 10 metres.

Gold Coast Superintendent Brett Jackson said the teen suffered severe arm injuries after becoming impaled on a “stick or a branch” in the fall.

It took firefighters two hours to reach the teenager and carry him to a waiting four-wheel-drive that ferried him to an ambulance.

Pages Pinnacle is a 400-metre-high bushwalking track at Advancetown, in the Gold Coast hinterland. It is located on a ridge between Springbrook and the Numinbah Valley. It features steep climbs and descents and is considered one of the most challenging Gold Coast hinterland hikes.

“Those areas are known for the scenery and sometimes they are steep, and hiking – especially if you are by yourself – can have an element of danger to it,” Jackson said.

“So we would recommend going in a group and at least if you are going to go by yourself, make sure people know where you are going to go.

“Please take safety equipment, make sure your phone is fully charged, and if you can, take water and safety equipment such as blankets or a bandage or lighting such as a torch, that can be advantageous too.”

The teenager was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
