Authorities have issued a shelter-in-place for areas in south Austin, Texas as they search for two suspects in a series of shootings that started late Saturday and continued Sunday.
Mayor Kirk Watson said multiple shootings have been reported “throughout the area,” including at least two fire stations. “Please remain inside,” Watson said, adding that some residents appeared to be moving between locations as the incidents unfolded.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the shootings appear random in nature, and investigators have not identified a motive.
Who Are the Suspects?
Police are searching for two Hispanic male suspects, both believed to be in their late teens, Davis said.
She said one has medium wavy hair; the other has longer hair. Authorities also released information on three vehicles possibly linked to the shootings which include a black Honda Accord, a gold Honda, and a white Nissan Altima.
Who Are the Victims?
Four people have been shot, including one with life‑threatening injuries. Three others have non‑life‑threatening wounds.
No further information about the victims was provided immediately.
Watson said two of the shootings occurred at local fire stations, but it is unclear if the victims listed worked at those stations.
Which Neighborhoods Should Shelter in Place?
Multiple neighborhoods have been ordered to shelter in place over a 36-mile area.
The police issued the order for areas south of Slaughter Lane, East of McKinney Falls Parkway, North of Ben White Blvd and West of Escarpment Blvd.
The location stretches from Skyline Park to Dick Nicholas District Park.
What Should People Do if they See Suspects?
Chief Davis urged residents to call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious and warned people not to approach the vehicles.
She also cautioned residents to secure their cars, saying several vehicles have been stolen during the incidents, saying, “Do not leave your keys or key fob in the vehicle.”
Watson said the suspects appeared to have been switching vehicles during the course of the investigation.
Police said the investigation is active and ongoing, and additional updates are expected.
