The New York Yankees came into the offseason with big question marks. One of their more stable pieces of the team was the starting rotation. New York didn’t have a star-studded rotation last season, but it had some stable starters.
This offseason, the Bronx Bombers traded Nester Cortes and signed Max Fried. Adding Fried atop the rotation next to Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt should give New York one of the deeper rotations in baseball. The Yankees also have Marcus Stroman and Will Warren, who could compete for innings.
But over the last few weeks, the Yankees have lost Gil for a few months, and now Cole is undergoing further testing on an injured throwing elbow.
With these major question marks surrounding Gil and Cole, the Yankees could look to swing a huge trade to acquire another starting pitcher to put at the top of their rotation.
Seattle Mariners ace Luis Castillo could be a very welcomed addition to the Yankees’ roster. The Yankees were reportedly in on Castillo when the Cincinnati Reds were looking to trade him a few seasons ago, but Castillo ultimately landed in Seattle.
Castillo has been very consistent for the last few years, and New York needs that level of consistency with the question marks surrounding Cole and Gil.
In exchange for the righty, the Bronx Bombers would likely need to part ways with a few big league-ready prospects like Spencer Jones, Everson Pereira, or Jorbit Vivas. It would cost a few more prospects as well, but it’s a move the Yankees may want to look into.
