The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the more interesting teams to follow at the trade deadline this month. They’re seemingly on the fence of buying and selling in the coming weeks and Nolan Arenado’s name has been mentioned as a trade chip as often as anybody.
With Arenado sitting on a massive contract that also has a no-trade clause attached to it, a trade has seemed quite unlikely, but that hasn’t stopped the Cardinals from trying.
On Sunday, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the Cardinals are planning to keep Arenado on the roster through the deadline and beyond.
“The Cardinals are planning on keeping third baseman Nolan Arenado through the deadline with no teams showing strong interest in him since he rejected potential deals to the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels,” Nightengale wrote.
This decision could be a mix of multiple things.
First of all, there’s likely no team that’s going to be willing to take on the brunt of Arenado’s contract. The prospect return in a potential deal wouldn’t be that big of an issue, as the Cardinals would likely want to trade him away as a salary dump.
With Arenado aging and struggling this year, his value has tanked dramatically. Since he axed both the trades to the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels in the last few months, a deal seems quite unlikely.
The Cardinals could explore the possibility again in the offseason, but even then, it seems unlikely. Arenado should be expected to play out the rest of his contract with the Cardinals unless he regresses so quickly that St. Louis opts to cut him down the road.
