A cat owner was left bewildered after repeatedly being pounced on by her feline from above the door—until she finally uncovered the culprit’s sneaky secret.
Kira Blorraine (@kirablorraine) shared a viral video of her cat, Sadie May, making an impressive leap from the floor straight onto the narrow ledge above a doorway, where she would lie in wait to ambush unsuspecting passersby. The footage, which has racked up 86,400 likes and almost 500,000 views on TikTok, captured the moment of discovery.
“I caught her,” the owner shouts in the video. “She’s gonna need help getting down now,” she added, as the cat carefully attempted to crawl along another, much wobblier ledge.
“Our cat’s new favorite thing is trying to pounce on us from above the door when we get home and I finally figured out how she was getting up there,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay. “She’s a mischeivous little cat,” she captioned the post.
While Sadie May’s leap might look shocking, it’s not entirely out of the ordinary for a feline. According to Arm & Hammer, cats can jump up to six times their body length in one leap, thanks to their powerful hind leg muscles and flexible spines. That means even a seemingly average housecat can soar five to six feet off the ground with ease.
As for the desire to launch sneak attacks from above? It turns out there’s an instinctual reason. Hill’s Pet Nutrition explains that cats often seek elevated spots because it gives them a vantage point, both for play and to feel secure. This behavior mimics their wild ancestors, who would ambush prey from above or perch in trees to avoid danger.
Sadie May’s antics clearly struck a chord with TikTok users, many of whom shared stories of their own “ambush” cats.
“My mom’s college cat did this professionally 24/7. They named her Ambush,” shared Rachel.
“We have a orange girl named Left eye that dive bombs us from the cabinets all the time and istg she’s gonna give me a heart attack one day,” added Amber.
“My cat used to know exactly which step to sit on to smack my head as I walked past. I’m the shortest in our house so he didn’t do it to anyone else but me,” wrote another viewer.
“She’s a hefty girl to be so agile,” commented Catee.
The owner herself responded in surprise: “She’s the most un agile cat ever so that’s why we were so confused how she was getting up there.”
Some users offered advice, with one writing: “I’d put up some cat shelves. She likes to be high up. This is her telling you that lol,” suggested Canna.
“Spider cat Spider cat does whatever a Spider cat does,” joked Candy, referring to the famous Simpson’s Spider Pig song.
