Sometimes a single line can make or break a scene. Such was the case with the diner scene in “Heaven’s Half Hour,” the first episode of the new series “Daredevil: Born Again.” According to Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, the line in question was, “Didn’t she shoot you in the face?”

According to showrunner Dario Scardapane, it was while rehearsing the scene that Cox and D’Onofrio both expressed that something was missing.

“We were just going through the scene, and [Charlie and Vincent] said to me, ‘There has to be humor,'” Scardapane said. Something needed to break the tension between these two old enemies if they were going to have the real conversation everyone wanted.

Scardapane continued, “Then Vincent was like, ‘But it can’t be too funny.’ So they came up with the moment that led to Fisk’s laugh. In my opinion as a writer and a fan, that’s the moment of the diner [scene], where Fisk laughs with real joy — and real menace.”

The line refers to Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), aka Echo. She turns on Fisk at the end of “Hawkeye” when she learns it was he who arranged to have her father killed. In her own miniseries, “Echo,” Fisk tries and fails to win back her loyalty, even after she’s shot him in the face.

Scardapane told Marvel.com it was Charlie Cox and D’Onofrio who came up with the small talk that led to the laugh, as well as the line, “Didn’t she shoot you in the face?”

The scene is important to the “Daredevil: Born Again” premiere. Not only does it give us a chance to see Cox and D’Onofrio reunite for a scene, but it also highlights the parallel journeys of their characters. Both are trying to change: Murdock is trying to not be Daredevil and Fisk is trying to not be the Kingpin. Time will tell if either succeeds (but if either did, there probably wouldn’t be a series, would there?).

The diner scene represents the first scene the two have shared ever since “Daredevil” ended in 2018. While both have appeared in Marvel projects since – in one case, even in the same project, since both Cox and D’Onofrio appear in “Echo” – this is the first time they’ve appeared on camera together as these characters since “Daredevil” was canceled.
