Deion Sanders isn’t just the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer is also a father who’s heavily invested in the success of his son, who just happens to play quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.
And now that his son, Shedeur Sanders, has a new head coach in Cleveland, Deion has made it known he’d like to speak with Todd Monken about how best to use his son and get the most out of him (Deion coaches Shedeur for two years at Jackson State and two more years at Colorado).
“I was supposed to go, actually next week — but I’ve got to shoot a commercial — to Cleveland to meet [Monken] because I want to meet him, because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going,” Deion said on Garrett Bush’s podcast.
“That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it. Even a guy like Travis Hunter being drafted to Jacksonville and I’ve had him for the last three [seasons], don’t you think you would want to talk to me to ask me what gets him going and what backs him off? You would want to know that. So, I anticipate, and I can’t wait to have that conversation with Coach Monken.”
It was widely known that Deion didn’t exactly get along with former Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski. After the team drafted Shedeur in the fifth round of the 2025 draft, Deion kept his distance as the team seemingly didn’t want him involved with Shedeur.
Shedeur had a decent rookie season — passing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions — but he wasn’t playing anywhere near the level he did during his senior year at Colorado playing under Deion, when he threw for 4,134 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
With the slate getting wiped clean in Monken’s first year, Shedeur is expected to compete with Deshaun Watson for the starting job in training camp. It’s not known if Deion will be more hands-on in Shedeur’s development going forward.
