A man who was visiting Brisbane from Thailand has been arrested and charged with the murder of a woman who died in a kayak incident in 2020.
The 55-year-old man was in Brisbane on Sunday, when he was arrested by detectives and charged with murder and fraud.
The charges related to the death of a 54-year-old Warner woman, who had been kayaking with the man on Lake Samsonvale, north-west of Brisbane, when she reportedly fell into the water and drowned, police said.
“Once back to shore, witnesses and emergency services performed CPR but were unable to revive the woman and she was declared deceased at the scene.”
Detectives initially ruled her death as non-suspicious, but after a lengthy coronial investigation, it was determined to be suspicious.
Police have alleged the man was involved in the drowning.
Moreton District Detective Acting Inspector Steve Windsor said incidents were not always what they initially seemed, and thanked detectives for investigating the case.
“Through their tenacious work, we have justice for the woman who tragically died that day as well as her family.
“This is also an important reminder to the community to report any suspicious circumstances to police as you see them. Even if they seem insignificant, they may be an important piece to the puzzle in an investigation.”
Police were expected to provide further information about the case later on Monday, as the man was scheduled to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court.
