Delays are impacting commutes across Sydney.

Sydneysiders are waking up to cancellations and delays across the rail network as the union kicks off a series of work bans.

After a Christmas and New Year truce, the rail unions have restarted 10 major work bans including a 23km/h reduction in speeds by train crews. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has also placed a ban on members working with contractors, and another ban prevents work to reinstate train services if they have been cancelled.

On Wednesday morning, delays and cancellations were widespread across the network.

Commuters on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line faced a 40-minute wait for a train with three consecutive services cancelled. It’s a similar story for services departing from the city on the T4 line, with multiple trains cancelled and delays of up to 47 minutes.

Multiple T1 Western Line services were also cancelled this morning, and some trains were delayed by 25 minutes. At Parramatta, where services usually depart every few minutes, commuters were waiting about 30 minutes for a train.

Multiple cancellations have hit the T3 Liverpool and the T2 Inner West and Leppington lines and services from the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast.

Sydney Trains chief executive Matt Longland said maintenance at Bondi and Homebush had not been carried out overnight by members of the Combined Rail Unions, triggering today’s delays and cancellations.

Work bans at the Rail Operations Centre are also impacting the network, and Transport for NSW expects the problems to get worse as the week goes on.
