The great and the good of the European People’s Party are in Valencia for the party’s annual congress, six months after the city was hit by devastating floods.

German MEP Manfred Weber has been elected president in an uncontested process, after warning ahead of the congress of an authoritarian wave in Europe in an interview with Euronews.

German chancellor in waiting Friedrich Merz has addressed the congress, warning the party not too lose the pro-European vote by approving burdensome measures on business and citizens.

“The world of trade is turning towards us,” Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen told the conference, adding  that “In every crisis there is also an opportunity,” referring to the tariff crisis and highlighting that Europe’s Single Market is the largest in the world and “the champion in export to GDP”.
