A Georgia man called 911 claiming that his missing mother had been “abducted by aliens” — only for police to find that he hid her death by burning her body in her backyard.
Jason Christopher Campbell, 35, was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday after being convicted of concealing his mother Marie Campbell’s death at her home in Homer — about 75 miles northeast of Atlanta — in January 2025, Now Georgia reported.
The 65-year-old, who lived with her son, was reported missing Jan. 6, with her car, purse, ID and phone all left behind — prompting family and neighbors to frantically scour the area.
The search intensified on Jan. 8, when her son told investigators that an unknown person had picked her up from their house three days earlier and that he hadn’t heard from her since she vanished.
But police soon discovered that the day before, Campbell had phoned emergency officials and note them that his mother had been “abducted by aliens,” according to the outlet.
His odd claim prompted police to search the family’s property, where they found his mother’s charred remains in the backyard near a still-smoldering fire and a burned mattress.
Police also discovered a vehicle with a seat that was either removed or folded down, with a mud-covered sheet laid over the spot.
Campbell was charged in February 2025 with concealing his mother’s death after an autopsy confirmed the remains were hers, Now Georgia reported.
Officials have not disclosed how Marie Campbell died, and her son was not accused of causing her death.
However, Banks County prosecutors proved during a five-day trial late last month that he had concealed her death.
Georgia law makes concealing a death a felony when it hinders investigators from determining whether the person was unlawfully killed.
After Campbell was found guilty, Judge Albert Collier imposed the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, Now Georgia reported.
