Wide receiver Darius Slayton has been with the New York Giants for seven seasons, and in that time, he’s developed into one of the team’s more reliable players.

Slayton has played in 105 of 117 career games, recording 296 catches, 4,435 yards, and 22 touchdowns.

But Slayton’s durability was tested this offseason when it was reported he suffered a pretty significant injury that required surgery.

“#Giants WR Darius Slayton recently underwent surgery for a core-muscle injury, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Slayton will miss the spring but is expected to be a full go for training camp,” NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo posted on X.

What It Means

The fact that he’ll be ready for training camp is a big win for Slayton.

With the Giants drafting Notre Dame’s Malachi Fields in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft and adding veteran receivers Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin III and Isaiah Hodgins in free agency, Slayton can’t afford to miss any time with such a crowded WR room that also features incumbents Jalin Hyatt and Xavier Gipson.

Malik Nabers will be returning from his season-ending injury, and he’s New York’s no-doubt WR1. Behind him though, the competition is wide open. Slayton was the Giants’ second-leading receiver last season, totaling 37 catches, 538 yards, and one touchdown.

New York also hosted former Pro Bowl wideout Odell Beckham Jr., who spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Giants, for a workout and a physical last week. He has a familiarity with new head coach Jim Harbaugh from their time together with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.

“We worked him out; he looked good,” Harbaugh said. “We just got to kind of continue conversations with him. I really like him. We got to talk Tuesday night and kind of see where he’s at, see where we’re at, see what he’s thinking, see what we’re thinking now [with] the roster. See if it makes sense. I think if we do anything, just being honest, it has to make sense for the Giants. It has to make sense for him.”

If Beckham Jr. signs with the Giants, it will become even more difficult for Slayton to lock down a roster spot.
