A senior shelter dog has been waiting for a loving home for more than 478 days after his owner passed away—but he hasn’t lost his spark.
Bernie, who is almost 10 years old, is a “mutt-i-gree,” a mix of Rhodesian Ridgeback, pit bull terrier, and hound. He was first adopted from North Shore Animal League America in 2018 but returned to the shelter in May 2024 after his owner’s death. Since then, he’s been patiently waiting for another chance at a forever home.
A Facebook post sharing Bernie’s story has garnered more than 3,500 likes and hundreds of comments from people touched by his journey.
“Bernie was originally rescued from Tennessee and spent his entire life in a loving home until his beloved owner passed away. Overnight, Bernie lost everything: his family, his home, his world,” the post read.
“Bernie has been longing for one more chance at love. Despite all he’s been through, he hasn’t lost his joy or zest for life,” it continued.
A spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America told Newsweek that Bernie was adopted into a loving home in 2018. After his owner’s passing, he returned to the shelter in search of his next family.
They described Bernie as an energetic and affectionate dog who still has plenty of life left to live. “Now, at almost 10 years old, Bernie longs for a loving home in which he can be spoiled and doted upon through his golden years. But make no mistake, there is so much life in Bernie!” the spokesperson said.
They added that Bernie thrives on regular mental and physical enrichment, loves the outdoors, and would do best in a quiet suburban home with a big, fully fenced backyard. “He’s very active and high-energy,” they said, noting that Bernie enjoys long walks, car rides, belly rubs, chew toys, and “giving his paw to anyone who will hold it.”
Because of his size—he weighs around 75 pounds—a household with older children would be ideal. Bernie also gets along well with other dogs. “A recent meeting with a chihuahua was all happy wagging tails and sniffing,” the spokesperson said. Any potential adopter with another dog can arrange a “meet & greet” with Bernie at the organization’s on-campus dog park.
Despite being with the shelter since May 2024, Bernie continues to be overlooked—something staff say is common for senior and large-breed dogs. “A lot of people come to animal shelters and rescues looking for puppies while overlooking older and larger dogs,” the spokesperson explained. “Older dogs are often the best choice for someone who is looking for a companion that has matured into their full size and personality.”
Bernie’s size and energy level may make him a harder fit for some homes, but staff are hopeful his luck will soon change. He’s become a favorite among the team—and even has a secret admirer. “Not yet… but he’s a staff favorite and even has a Fairy Godmother!” the spokesperson said.
“One of our amazing volunteers–who prefers to remain anonymous–is so enamored with sweet Bernie that she has offered to cover his adoption fees and, while he’s a healthy boy now, cover any medical expenses here at North Shore Animal League America that his adopters might incur in the future as Bernie grows older. That’s true love.”
On Facebook, hundreds have shared words of encouragement for Bernie’s journey.
“Bernie is precious! Prayers this cutie finds a loving home soon,” wrote Paula Fava.
“Praying that Sweet Furbaby Bernie finds his new furever loving family and home,” added Jan.
“Thanks for rescuing and helping this handsome boy. Pray that he gets his forever home very soon,” said Betty.
“Precious adorable. Pray he gets a loving caring home soon,” added Teresia.
