A student is fighting for life after being stabbed by another student at an Islamic school on Brisbane’s southern outskirts.

The 17-year-old boy was stabbed about 11.47am on Tuesday at the Islamic College of Brisbane on Acacia Road at Karawatha, near Logan.

He was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition, the Queensland Ambulance Service said.

Police believe an altercation occurred between two boys known to each other, and said a 16-year-old was assisting with inquiries.

Officers remained on the scene with paramedics just before 1.30pm and said they were patrolling nearby streets.

An email to parents said students would be dismissed about an hour earlier than usual, after “an incident on campus”.

“This decision … is a precautionary measure to support the wellbeing of our students and staff and to allow the College to appropriately manage the situation,” the school said.

“There is no ongoing risk to the College community. As the matter involves the privacy of individuals, we are unable to provide further details and appreciate your understanding and respect for the confidentiality of those involved.”

Speaking to media outside the school, director of educational operations Tariq Ismail said it was cooperating with police, and prioritising staff and student wellbeing.

“Islamic College of Brisbane can confirm that a serious incident involving two students occurred on campus earlier today,” he said.

“The situation was brought under control without any ongoing risk to students, staff, or the wider community.”

Ismail said a “significant amount of information” was circulating online, and urged the community to refrain from sharing inaccurate or unverified details.

“We respectfully ask that members of the public refrain from sharing or commenting on speculation and misinformation, as doing so may cause unnecessary distress to those affected, and could compromise the integrity of an ongoing investigation.”

The Islamic College of Brisbane opened in 1995, and teaches classes from prep to year 12. It has more than 1700 students and 230 staff.

The school attracted attention in July when Pauline Hanson visited, wearing an Israeli flag pin, with a TV crew.

On Monday, a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the abdomen at a school at Manunda in Cairns.

That boy was transported to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition. Another 15-year-old was arrested after fleeing on foot.
