A 45-year-old man and an 11-year-old girl are dead, and two boys have been injured, after their car veered off the road and crashed in an embankment west of Taree.

The man and three children were driving to a relative’s house but never arrived, prompting a call to NSW Police.

After two hours of searching for the group in the early hours of Saturday morning, police located the SUV in an embankment off The Bucketts Way in Tugrabakh, near Gloucester.

The male driver and the girl were found dead at the scene. An eight-year-old boy and a nine-year-old boy were trapped in the vehicle before being freed by emergency services.

Chief Inspector Timothy Bayly, of Manning Great Lakes Police District, said the boys had sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“The two boys were removed from the vehicle [by] emergency services and they were transported down to John Hunter Hospital,” Bayly said on Saturday afternoon.

“At [that] stage, a crime scene was declared and specialist police attended to conduct investigations into the matter.”

With the formal identification of the bodies yet to be completed, Bayly would not provide details on the relationship of the 45-year-old man to the three children, but said: “The male and the three children were known to each other.”
