A 53-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman was fatally stabbed inside a home in the NSW Northern Tablelands in what police will allege was an act of domestic violence.

Police were called to an address on Rockvale Road, Armidale, about 2.15am on Thursday, following reports of a stabbing.

Inside the unit, officers found a woman aged in her 40s with multiple stab wounds. She was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

The man was arrested at the scene and taken to Armidale Police Station.

Police Inspector Greg Ryan told the media on Thursday morning that emergency services were met with tragic scenes when they arrived at the unit.

“Obviously, this is devastating for the family,” he said.

Ryan said the man and woman were known to each other and had been in a de facto relationship.

“It’s being treated as a domestic violence murder for that reason.”

Forensic officers seized a knife at the scene which police will allege was used to murder the woman.

He said police were speaking with a number of witnesses, including residents who lived in the same unit complex, as part of their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact police.

The man will appear before a bail court on Thursday afternoon.

Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
