Police minister Anthony Carbines has labelled anti-immigration protesters attending today’s rally as “unhinged grubs”, saying the government will take no notice of their “gripes”.

“They’re just grubs, absolute grubs, and we know what they’re there for: to promote hate in the community, to blame people for their gripes and their complaints and their whinges,” he said.

“They can march up and down all they like, their views are of no consequence to this government.”

Carbines said the government would do all it could to support migrant groups targeted by the protest.

“We will do everything we can to wrap our arms around those who feel vulnerable and upset at this time and make sure that they get the support that they need,” he said.

Carbines said officers on the ground at Sunday’s protest had the resources to manage those at the rally, but urged those attending to show respect to police, who are mourning the loss of two colleagues in Porepunkah.
