mother of newborn baby dumped in Sydney rubbish bin found by police

The mother of a newborn boy found dead in a rubbish bin outside a unit complex in Sydney’s western suburbs has been charged with concealing her son’s birth by disposing of his body, almost three weeks after giving birth.

The baby was found naked inside what resembled a bin bag outside the Auburn apartment complex on August 31. Detective acting Superintendent Darren Sly said at the time that the newborn may have been in the bin for up to 36 hours.

The 24-year-old, found by police on Thursday after an exhaustive investigation, was taken to hospital before she was transported to Auburn police station. She was arrested about 6.30pm after answering questions from detectives, and charged later on Thursday night with “mother alone conceal birth by disposing body”.

The charge, which carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, relates specifically to the disposal of a dead child’s body to conceal that a birth has taken place.

The woman was granted conditional bail and will appear before Downing Centre Local Court on October 27.
