The New England Patriots may have made one of the more impressive post-preseason cut signings.
New England brought in the former beloved New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito. DeVito just faced New England in the preseason, going 17-for-20 with 198 passing yards and three touchdowns.
He is expected to join the Patriots roster and be the emergency third quarterback behind Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs.
On the surface, the signing of DeVito felt like a very solid one for New England and according to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, it was exactly that.
Knox gave the signing of DeVito for the Patriots a “B-plus” grade, citing DeVito’s age and New England’s need for a backup quarterback.
“It’s a smart addition for the Patriots, who traded Joe Milton to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason but again have a young quarterback to develop as an understudy,” Knox wrote. “DeVito only turned 27 earlier this month and has eight starts and an 88.4 career quarterback rating on his resume. He’ll only be a restricted free agent next offseason, so the Patriots have up to two years to determine whether he can be their long-term backup.”
DeVito captivated the football world two seasons ago when he was inserted into the starting quarterback role after an injury to then starter Daniel Jones. He started six games and threw for 1,101 yards along with eight touchdowns and three interceptions. DeVito started just two games last season, racking up only 257 passing yards and no touchdowns.
DeVito should be a solid third option at quarterback for the Patriots and it would not be a bit surprising to see him take the backup job away from Dobbs at some point during the season.
