Plans to upgrade South Bank have won the endorsement of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, winning three 2025 AILA Queensland Awards.
The masterplan, which is the South Bank Corporation’s “flexible long-term blueprint to guide the evolution” of South Bank, includes removing the Piazza, creating more seamless northern and southern arrival experiences, and extending green areas.
AILA Queensland Jury chair David Hatherly said the plan would finally connect South Bank visitors to the Brisbane River.
“At the moment, there’s only a couple of points that you actually can get close to the river, so I think the new masterplan does that really well,” he said.
“Long term, it’s setting Brisbane up for huge success around South Bank.”
Commissioned by the former Palaszczuk Labor government and released in May 2024, the master plan is designed to respond to the changing needs of visitors, increase green space and replace ageing infrastructure.
It incorporates more than 25,000 items of public feedback.
The plan document concedes that “no commitment has been made to deliver the contents of the masterplan, with future implementation remaining subject to subsequent South Bank Corporation and Queensland government consideration”.
Asked whether the government was supportive of the plan Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie did not offer any detail on its implementation.
