The Michigan Wolverines football program has dominated college football headlines over the past several days — and not for the best reasons.
The university abruptly announced the firing of second-year head coach Sherrone Moore for cause after he violated program and university rules.
That was quickly followed by rumors about the future of athletic director Warde Manuel, who, for now, is staying put and leading the search for the program’s next head coach — a critical hire if Michigan hopes to keep its roster intact, particularly five-star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood.
According to ESPN’s College GameDay host Rece Davis, the search shouldn’t be complicated. In his view, there’s one clear name Michigan should prioritize: Detroit Lions passing game coordinator and longtime college head coach David Shaw.
“If I were in Warde Manuel and Michigan’s position, I’d have David Shaw very high on my list,” Davis posted on Friday. “Given the circumstances, likely atop the list.”

Shaw coached the Stanford Cardinal from 2011 to 2022, and during that span he led the program to a 96-54 record, making him the winningest coach in school history.
He appeared in eight bowl games, won three Pac-12 titles, two Rose Bowls, and earned Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors four times. His final four seasons were tough, though, as Stanford went just 14-28 during that stretch, ultimately leading to his departure.
It’s unclear whether Michigan plans to interview Shaw — or whether he’s even interested in returning to a college head-coaching role — but at 52 years old, he still has plenty of coaching years ahead of him. His experience alone would make him a significant candidate for the job.
