The speculation about whether Steve Kerr would return as the Golden State Warriors coach has ended, as Kerr has reached a new deal with the team.

On Saturday evening, ESPN’s senior NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Kerr signed a two-year deal with Golden State and will remain the league’s highest-paid coach.

Charania reported that Dan Eveloff and Rick Smith of Priority Sports shared the news with him, as well as ESPN colleagues Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater.

Reportedly, there were “three weeks of extensive conversations” between the Warriors and Kerr before reaching this deal to keep him there for the next several seasons.

The specifics of this new deal weren’t disclosed, but ESPN indicated that he earned $17.5 million last season as the Warriors’ head coach.

This is clearly a significant move for Golden State as they have secured the coach who guided this team to four championships during his time there.

It keeps Kerr in place, which is a major deal for keeping Stephen Curry happy, and is likely to attract any huge stars this team might be eyeing for a big trade.

In particular, there has been previous speculation that the Warriors might be suitors for a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks for former league MVP and champion Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Additionally, other potential star players could be in the mix, including the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell and the Los Angeles Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard.

The Warriors experienced a disappointing 2025-26 season, which saw them lose multi-time All-Star Jimmy Butler to a season-ending torn right ACL injury, and then Moses Moody to a season-ending ruptured left patellar tendon injury.

Stephen Curry was also out for a significant stretch of games due to a lingering knee injury concern, but returned towards the end of the regular season and in time for the play-in tournament.

Unfortunately, the Warriors failed to qualify for the NBA Playoffs, but some believe they can contend with Kerr as coach and Curry as their main star, possibly by adding more star power to the roster this offseason.

Kerr has coached the Warriors since 2014 with a 604-353 record and four championship rings, the most of any currently active head coach.
