Labor MP Ed Husic has said he would “love” for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to recognise Palestine as soon as possible, as calls for action expand after more than 100,000 Australians protested yesterday to demand an end to a worsening crisis in Gaza.
Husic, a staunch pro-Palestine advocate, has argued that recognising a state of Palestine would help to reform democratic processes that would undercut Hamas’ influence in Gaza and support peaceful outcomes in the Middle East.

Albanese, who last week resisted calls to follow France, the United Kingdom and Canada in announcing plans to recognise Palestine, is now seeking a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as an increasing number of Australians voice their opposition to a deteriorating situation in the Middle East.
“I would love for him to do it today,” Husic told Nine’s Today.
“I think it’s an important signal to send … the sooner, the better. But it’s up to the PM, obviously, who’s juggling a lot of different considerations before making that call, but I think he would get massive support out of Australians if he did it today.”
