They could spend, though, and Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter believes Detroit will make one of the biggest splashes of the offseason.
In Reuter’s 2026 opening day lineup predictions, Detroit has a new third baseman by the name of Eugenio Suarez. Suarez is predicted to join Detroit’s lineup after the prediction of Gleyber Torres heading to San Diego in the offseason.
Suarez was acquired by the Seattle Mariners at this year’s MLB trade deadline, and he’s been rather disappointing since being acquired. He batted just .186 with a .661 OPS in his first month with the Mariners.
September is off to a better start, as Suarez entered Tuesday boasting a slash line of .250/.300/.643 with three home runs this month. He will need to continue to produce if Seattle has any hopes of chasing down the Houston Astros in the American League West.
As for his fit in Detroit, Suarez did not have much success against the AL Central this season. In 32 at-bats, he collected just six hits, two of which were home runs and only seven RBI. While it was a limited sample size, it was his worst performance against any division.
Detroit may be desperate to hit on a free agent signing this winter after falling short in the Bregman sweepstakes last winter. If so, Suarez and his other-worldly power would bring a thump to a Tigers lineup that it hasn’t had since prime Miguel Cabrera.
