Ronaldo honoured
Our second award sees the Champions League’s all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo honoured with a special accolade in recognition of his legacy.
The first five-time winner of the competition, in which he netted 140 times, he is also the only player to score in three different finals.
On receving the award, he says: “For me, it’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you for this amazing award, it means a lot to me. I had the pleasure to play in this competition. For me, it was special because I won so many times. The Champions League and goals are like ketchup; when you open it, it just keeps coming!”
Buffon reacts
Speaking to ceremony hosts Reshmin Chowdhury and Pedro Pinto, the legendary goalkeeper says of the Champions League: “It was the biggest reason I played for such a long time, but not because I wanted to win – because I enjoyed playing in it. Without a doubt, it’s the most important competition for soccer.”
The 2024 UEFA President’s Award
It’s time for the first accolade of the ceremony, which recognises outstanding achievements, professional excellence and exemplary personal qualities.
This year’s winner is the great Gianluigi Buffon. A 2006 World Cup winner with Italy, the goalkeeping legend also appeared in three Champions League finals with Juventus.
He is the fifth Italian recipient of the award after Gianni Rivera, Arrigo Saachi and his former team-mates Paolo Maldini and Francesco Totti.

Reminder of how it all works
The 36 teams have been divided into four pots based on their UEFA coeffients.
Each team will play eight matches – four at home and four away – against two teams from each pot. Their opponents will be determined by designated automated software.
Teams cannot face opponents from their own country, and can only play a maximum of two opponents from the same nation.
The top eight teams will progress straight through to the last 16, while those ranked ninth to 24th will enter the knockout play-off round in a bid to join them.
However, teams ranked 25th to 36th will be eliminated from all European competition.

History will be made this afternoon as the draw for the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League gets underway.
The Champions League has undergone a huge change for the first time in 32 years, with the home-and-away four-team group stage now a thing of the past.
This season sees the introduction of a new 36-team league phase with designated automated software used to decide the schedule, by randomly selecting a club’s opponents for the competition.
