The New York Yankees have a lot of roster decisions coming up in the offseason as many big names are expected to become free agents.
One of those players is Luke Weaver, who has been with the Yankees for the last three years and was used in a variety of situations. Randy Miller of NJ.com predicted New York will bring back Weaver on a three-year deal.
“Prediction: Re-signs with Yankees for three years,” wrote Miller. “Weaver’s first two postseason outings this year were atrocious, five runs over no innings, but he’s been the biggest bargain reliever in baseball for two years. He showed that he can be a reliable closer late into ’24 and again for a stretch this season. … Weaver wasn’t right in the second half, and he was tipping pitches in the playoffs, but he’s proved over a long enough sample size that he can pitch in New York.”
Weaver’s season overall was hindered significantly by his hamstring injury as he was lights out prior to the injury and was horrendous when he returned. However, he showed enough prior to his stint on the injured list that he can still pitch at a very high level for the best teams in Major League Baseball.
Spotrac projects Weaver’s average annual value in free agency to be $9.9 million, so if Miller’s projection of three years holds true, the contract will be worth a grand total of $29.7 million. Despite inconsistencies this season, it makes sense for the Yankees to bring him back especially since Devin Williams is unlikely to return.
