A question I often pose fellow editors, publicists, and brand founders alike is “what makes this special?” A makeup brand launching a new lipstick shade; a haircare brand launching another take on shampoo; a fragrance brand launching a fresh parfum. Maybe none of these examples are novel in their idea—oftentimes there’s nothing groundbreaking about a lipstick, shampoo, and perfume, but it’s the way a brand can reimagine these classic beauty products that makes them special and reflective of the beauty industry in a given year. • Why We Love It: Ask any makeup artist what their number one tip is, and they’d more often than not emphasize the importance of skin prep. • Why We Love It: It appears BeautyStat’s latest launch really did just fall out of a coconut tree. Here, Ron Robinson, founder of BeautyStat and cosmetic chemist for Hailey Bieber’s Rhode, delivers a masterfully hydrating elixir that ensures a luminous complexion on any skin type. I like to think of it as a hyaluronic acid serum 2.0. “Here we combine the gold standard hyaluronic acid, along with polyglutamic acid which is an amino sugar humectant that absorbs 5,000 times its weight in water plus five aspects of the coconut,” he explains, introducing the product in an Instagram video. All of this is mixed into a refreshing milky serum that absorbs instantly into skin—leaving a soft, smooth, radiance in the process. In my test, I found this paired well with other serums and creams in my routine, and never caused pilling. Because its so hydrating, I sometimes use this after an exfoliant to ensure my skin not only looks plump, but poreless too.

Each perfume in that five-piece collection was rooted in an ideal—freedom, peace, love, joy, and magic; but in 2024, Burch is moving in a different direction. “Sublime is the ultimate way you want to feel: confident, bold, sensual. It is a word and an emotion that has no ending… It makes you feel like anything is possible,” she says. Feminine, empowering, crafted by perfumers Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Christine Hassan, the new scent is rooted in a tethered leather according alongside patchouli and vetiver essence, brought to life via rose, Osmanthus flower, and Italian mandarin. There’s no denying the eau de parfum smells good—great even. It has an energizing quality to it that makes you want to douse yourself a in a few spritzes before a busy day or cheeky date. As Sublime wears down, the bright citrus notes fade into a comfortable warmth where the vetiver, rose, and magnolia have time to shine. • Why We Love It: The benefits of cryotherapy are well-understood these days; the idea being that by exposing the body to cold temperatures can help relieve anxiety and even reduce inflammation. The latter of which is why the tools like cryo globes and ice rollers have become popular in recent years. “[These] can then reduce swelling, help with surface redness, and take heat out of the skin, as well as easing any itching or stinging by dulling the nerve endings slightly,” facialist Katharine Mackenzie Paterson previously shared. • Why We Love It: Glow Recipe’s latest debut was one of my hardest kept secrets of 2024—in part because I was immediately intrigued by an SPF counterpart to the brand’s buzzy Dew Drops, and because it applies unlike any SPF I’ve ever tried. And per Glow Recipe co-founder Sarah Lee, that’s exactly the point. “With our new Dew Balm, you not only get SFP 45 protection with every swipe, but a dewy glass skin finish as well,” she says, making applying sunscreen not a chore, but an enjoyable experience.
• Editor’s Experience: Reading the ingredient list of Dew Balm also piqued my interest. Niacinamide, watermelon, hyaluronic acid, squalane—all of my favorite ingredients currently stocking my vanity, including the Dew Drops. But instead of just delivering a beautiful gleam, it protects skin from UV rays too via chemical UV filters. The brand describes this as a “sunscreen serum stick” and I couldn’t agree more. We like to talk about moisturizers with SPF but this encourages a new category—serum with SPF. When I apply it, I often forget its technically sunscreen at all which is truly the best part. Weightless, completely transparent, and fully undetectable aside from the dewy sheen it leaves behind, this is a sunscreen I can’t believe I ever had to live without.

• Editor’s Experience: With a bevy of sunscreens to choose from these days, I like to use as high an SPF as I can so I am quite pleased this offers broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection. But what I love most is that it’s a gel! I’ve seen this sort of formula before, but very rarely in one crafted specifically for the face. Applying this feels sort of like a face primer—lightweight, easily absorbed, and massaging into a sort of mattifying texture. Music to my oil skin-prone ears! (This blurred effect helps minimize the look of pores, too.)

• Editor’s Experience: Out of all the sunscreens on this list, I was most pleasantly surprised by this Avène drop. The stick boasts a soft, silky texture that feels almost like a skin tint or moisturizer when rubbed on. Though the formula itself appears white, it blends transparently, leaving a natural, skin-like sheen that’s great for daily use. To Smith’s point, I did not try it on my lips but love that I can throw this in my bag for summertime beach days and treat my entire face in one fell swoop.

• Editor’s Experience: Of course, Kim’s SPF is chock full of incredible ingredients: Photolyase helps calm stressed skin and improve sun-induced damage; squalane plumps and hydrates; niacinamide works to even skin tone; lingonberry delivers antioxidant protection. While all of this is fabulous, what I most love is the texture. Lightsaver’s sunscreens has this delectably whipped texture that feels cushiony and fluffy; I’d liken it to applying a rich, cleansing foam. That said, it absorbs quickly into the skin and leaves no white cast. And those with sensitive skin shouldn’t worry—it’s non-comedogenic and fragrance-free so it should not cause irritation.

Pair this with anti-aging ingredients like intelligent peptides, vitamin C, coenzyme Q10, and squalane, and you’re left with a formula that “reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while improving evenness of skin tone and appearance of hyperpigmentation.”
• Editor’s Experience: This sunscreen is the thickest formula on this list. Whipping its ingredient composition into a rich cream, Intellishade is best for someone with normal-to-dry skin. As someone with oily skin, it was a bit too heavy for me as we roll into summer but I am eager to try it again come fall. Despite its richness, I found it applied quite well—just rub it in with a circular motion until it turns from white to sheer. I’d recommend starting from the center of the face, blending outward to avoid excess buildup around the chin and hairline. Once blended, it leaves a gorgeous skin-like radiance I’d happily sport on any given day.
