Being ensconced in Midsomer, UK, and struggling to find meaning in a pressure cooker (C8) indicates that Jo Rainbow isn’t exactly home on the range, but the explainers have come thick and fast. Representing the positive is Jane Page of Cromer: “I loved my pressure cooker. It made the best pea and ham soup using the ham bone left over from Christmas as well as delicious porcupine meat balls. My mouth waters when I think of the golden syrup dumplings my mum used to make. Long live the pressure cooker!”

Margaret Collins of Terrigal adds: “Keep that pressure cooker! I still cook succulent stews and soups within 20 minutes using my mother’s old cooktop pressure cooker. Way better than many modern gizmos such as air fryers. No fats and no lost nutrition. Also saves on energy.”

Representing the negative, we have Stein Boddington of St Clair: “Apart from quickly cooking food at higher temperatures, the real purpose of a pressure cooker is to apply a thin, irregular coating of chicken stew to the ceiling of old rectories, after the little rubber thing pops out. My mother successfully did this in Gunning in 1955, and that rectory is still standing.”

Ted Richards of Batemans Bay says his aunt was the first member of the family to have one. “She experimented by trying to stew apples. All through the stewing process a fine jet of steam rose from the cooker, and when the stewing was over there were no apples in the cooker. They had all condensed on the ceiling.”

“I, too, like Paul Taylor (C8) have noticed the reversal of the BYD logo lettering and recall this brand being launched as ‘Build Your Dreams’,” says Gino DeBono of Collaroy. “Perhaps CYE stands for ‘Choice Yielding Electric’.”

“My now adult son had an unwavering devotion to Benita (Collings) when he was a three-year-old Play School (C8) devotee,” writes Pauline McGinley of Drummoyne. “We went along to a concert where his idol was presenting along with George (Spartels). As soon as my son saw the other members of the audience, his little face fell, and he turned to me and in a little faltering, confused voice whispered, ‘But she’s my Benita’.”

“I guess it’s time to sink or swim for our underwater hockey team (C8),” offers Peter Miniutti of Ashbury. “Apparently it will feature in the next James Bond film – Octopushy.”
