The New York Yankees desperately need to add a starting pitcher this season. The need to add one just got even bigger after the news broke that Clarke Schmidt is expected to miss the rest of the season with an elbow injury.
When looking at potential trade deadline replacements, the Yankees have a lot of options to choose from. But if they want to go big, there’s one name that appears to stand out above the rest.
Athlon Sports’ Zach Kaplan recently suggested the Yankees could acquire Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara in exchange for pitching prospects Brock Selvidge and Cade Smith.
“Like Keller, Alcantara’s price may never be lower, although as the Marlins may choose to hold onto the 2022 National League Cy Young as he continues to downfall to a season ERA above seven,” Kaplan wrote. “The Marlins are interested in obtaining plus value prospects for Sandy, who returned at the start of the year from Tommy John surgery.
“His unsightly numbers don’t reflect well for the Yankees, but this deal takes two prospects who wouldn’t be available until 2026 and gives the Yankees another plus arm.”
Acquiring Alcántara would be a huge risk, but it’s one worth taking for the Yankees. While he’s been disappointing this season, the Yankees could give him a change of scenery and coaching in order to help him find his footing again.
But the prospect return pitched by Kaplan isn’t nearly enough to steal Alcántara from the Marlins. The Yankees would likely need to include another top 10 prospect at the very least in order to net the star pitcher.
