The Indianapolis Colts and head coach Shane Steichen have officially made their starting quarterback choice. Daniel Jones has emerged victorious for the starting job, unseating young signal caller Anthony Richardson for the job.
After signing a one-year, $14 million contract in NFL free agency with the Colts, it became clear early on that Jones had a legitimate chance to win the job.
Richardson has been unable to prove that he can be a franchise caliber quarterback since being selected No. 4 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He also simply has not been able to stay on the field and has struggled with multiple injury issues.
Following his announcement that Jones would be the starting quarterback in Indianapolis, Steichen was asked about Richardson’s future.

When asked about whether or not Richardson had a future to become the Colts’ long-term starting quarterback still, Steichen answered with a stunning response.
“That’s hard to say. Obviously, Daniel (Jones) is our starter right now,” Steichen said. “And if something happens to Daniel at some point, AR gets another opportunity.”
That certainly sounds like a head coach who truly doesn’t think a player is going to be the long-term answer.
Jones is still young enough to be an option for Indianapolis for years to come. He is just 28 years old and has shown flashes of big-time potential during his career as well.
In the 70 career games Jones has played in with the New York Giants, he has completed 64.1 percent of his pass attempts for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. Jones has also run for 2,179 yards and 15 touchdowns.
On the other hand, Richardson has played in 15 total games, completing 50.6 percent of his passes for 2,391 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, while running for 635 yards and 10 scores.

Things can always change in the NFL. Richardson could finish the 2025 season as the Colts’ starting quarterback.
However, this is not a great outlook for the 23-year-old as he looks to get his NFL career back on track.
