Frosty the Snowman may be coming to life early this year.
Columbus and a huge chunk of central and western Ohio are under a freeze warning from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Wednesday as temperatures drop as low as 30 degrees.
Temperatures in Columbus are predicted to hit 34 degrees, possibly low enough to allow frost to form at ground level. NWS Wilmington measures temperatures five feet above the ground, so even if reported temperatures are above freezing, the ground may actually be colder.
The chilly specter of frost has hung over central Ohio since last Thursday when NWS Wilmington issued a hazardous weather advisory warning of potential frost through Tuesday. Temperatures in Columbus dipped to 40 degrees Thursday, but no frost was reported, according to NWS Wilmington data.
Columbus’ first frost falls typically on Oct. 27, but there’s a 10% chance it could fall as early as Oct. 14 on any given year, according to NWS data. The earliest it’s ever occurred is Sept. 21.
