Tony Hawk is embracing the role of grandparent, and he’s taking a moment to reflect on the legacy of his daughter-in-law’s famous father, Kurt Cobain.
Tony – whose son, Riley Hawk, is married to and shares a son with the late rocker’s daughter, Francis Bean Cobain – took to his Instagram Stories on Sunday, February 23, to recall a powerful memory involving Nirvana’s iconic frontman.
“Went straight from S.U.A.S. event at Houston skatepark to this concert in 1991,” Hawk, 56, wrote over a ticket stub from a Nirvana concert on October 20, 1991. He described the experience as “transformative,” adding that it was “as rare and powerful as live music can be” and “the world would never be the same.”
Hawk’s tribute didn’t stop there, as he shared his sorrow over the fact that Kurt never got to meet Riley, 32, or meet their shared grandchild, Ronin, who was born in September 2024. “I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become,” he mused about Francis, 32, continuing, “Meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”
The heartfelt reflection came just days after Hawk shared a sweet post about his growing bond with Ronin. He posted a photo of himself on Instagram on Monday, February 17, sitting on a skateboard with his grandchild in his arms, humorously remarking, “What happens when all of your kids can skate on their own and no longer rely on you to give them rides? You wait until they have their own kids.” The baby’s face was covered with an emoji for privacy.
Fans loved seeing the skateboard legend’s sweet moment, and let it known in the comments.
“I’m so glad these two kids met! Kurt would have loved Tony!,” one fan noted, while another commented, “Tony hawk teaching Kurt cobains grandson how to skate. 😍”
“Tony Hawk and Kurt Cobain having the same grandson is so 90s,” a third replied, while a fourth simply stated, “Imagine Tony Hawk being your grandpa.”
Kurt and Courtney Love welcomed Francis in August 1992 after getting married earlier that same year. Sadly, the “Heart-Shaped Box” hitmaker died by suicide on April 5, 1994 at the age of 27 after struggling with addiction.
Tony shares his son Riley (who was born Hudson Riley Hawk) with ex-wife Cindy Dunbar, whom he was married to from 1991 to 1993. Tony shares sons Spencer, 25, and Keegan, 23, with his second wife, Erin Lee, whom he was married to from 1996 to 2004. Finally, the athlete shares his only daughter Kadence, 16, with third wife Lhotse Merriam, whom he was married to from 2008 to 2011. He has been married to his current wife, Catherine Goodman, since 2015.
