President Donald Trump briefly appeared to refer to India instead of Brazil on Monday while praising the speed of election results in a Truth Social post.
Screenshots of the apparent error circulated widely online, including in a post by the official White House Rapid Response account. The post on Trump’s Truth Social account now refers to Brazil.
Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment outside of regular office hours on Monday.
Post Appeared to Reference India
Screenshots shared online show a Truth Social post attributed to Trump stating: “125 Million People voted today in the first round of India’s Presidential Election.”
The message went on to praise the speed of the vote count, stating that results were available shortly after polls closed, before contrasting that process with vote counting in parts of the United States. Trump concluded the post with criticism of U.S. elections.
The White House Rapid Response account shared a screenshot of that version on X, where it received hundreds of thousands of views.
The post currently visible on Trump’s Truth Social account refers to “Brazil’s Presidential Election.”
No explanation for the change was immediately available, and it remains unclear whether the original wording was the result of a typo, drafting error or another mistake.
Both versions of the post otherwise appear to contain the same wording.
Brazil and India’s Elections
Brazil held the first round of its 2026 presidential election on October 4. Brazilian election authorities are known for releasing results quickly after polls close because the country’s voting system is fully electronic.
India’s president is not elected by direct popular vote. Instead, the office is chosen by an electoral college consisting of elected members of parliament and state legislative assemblies. India’s most recent presidential election was held in 2022, and the next is not due until 2027.
