A man has been arrested after a man was shot dead in front of his home and an alleged getaway car was set ablaze in a “targeted attack” in Sydney’s west.

On Sunday evening, just before 7pm, a 31-year-old man left his home on Sutherland Street in Canley Heights and entered his car when an unknown person approached from Sutherland Street and shot him multiple times through the window, police allege.

The victim has been identified as David Khou. Police say he has links to Asian organised crime groups and the illicit drug trade, and was able to run from the car as he bled out, but succumbed to his injuries in his neighbour’s front yard.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics he could not be revived.

A neighbour who asked to remain anonymous said she and her family heard bangs and saw a man with blood on his shirt running away from a man dressed in black holding a handgun with a large barrel.

“I heard about three bangs, and I ran to the window to check what it was because I thought it was a firecracker … When I saw the blood and the gun I said no, this is no joke,” she said.

She said she saw a white car accelerate away at speed shortly after.

Her son, who also lives in the house, and has military experience, administered first aid to the victim who had a wound in his abdomen and another in his arm. Police arrived within five minutes, she said.

A short time later in the nearby suburb of Wakeley a white Audi was found well alight on Bathurst Street. Police believe the car was used as part of the alleged targeted shooting.
