Max Verstappen and his father, Jos Verstappen, are reportedly keen on owning a MotoGP team and have been said to have expressed interest in two teams. The report arrives weeks after Formula One owner Liberty Media took over the ownership of MotoGP.
The premier class of motorcycle racing has garnered interest from the world of Formula One in the past. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was linked to KTM early this year. Now, a report by Sky Sports Italy has revealed the four-time world champion’s MotoGP interest. It stated:
“Max Verstappen, through his entourage and his father Jos, is reportedly knocking on the doors of Honda and Aprilia to indirectly gauge the willingness of their respective satellite teams, LCR and Trackhouse, to sell 100% of their shares.
“The Dutchman, a lifelong racing enthusiast and a huge MotoGP fan, so much so that he recently expressed the desire to test Marc Marquez’s bike, is said to be keen on owning his own team.”
However, the report highlights that the odds of either of those teams being for sale are low. Explaining that LCR founder Lucio Cecchinello won’t sell his team, especially with the upcoming 2027 agreement, the report stated:
“Cecchinello is satisfied and extremely determined to continue managing his own company (which next season will reach the milestone of 20 years in MotoGP and 30 in the MotoGP World Championship). Lucio is also now an added value for Honda, with whom he works in extreme synergy and with whom he already has a supply agreement for the future starting in 2027. Cecchinello could welcome new sponsors and minority partners, but under no circumstances would he want to acquire the entire team.”
It is the same story with Trackhouse and Aprilia, given Justin Marks’ determination to push forward in MotoGP. The report added:
“The situation also seems similar at Trackhouse, given that Justin Marks (former American racing driver, entrepreneur, and owner of Trackhouse Racing) is oriented towards continuing his MotoGP project in full harmony with Aprilia, thanks also to the ability of Davide Brivio, who manages the team.”
Another recent example of an F1 to MotoGP switch is former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner, who is set to lead a takeover of the Tech3 MotoGP team by a group of investors, with the value being slightly shy of €20 million. Steiner will take on the role of CEO in 2026. Addressing the start of a new motorsports chapter in his life, the former F1 boss said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity. Tech3 is a great team with a huge amount of potential and an impressive legacy. Hervé’s impact on the team and MotoGP itself cannot be overstated, and we’re honoured to take over and keep building on those foundations. We’re excited to become part of the MotoGP paddock and maximise the potential of the team and the sport as it continues to grow, helping to bring it to new audiences.”
