So far in February, there have been two recalls affecting Publix Super Markets’ stores and products in five states, according to the latest available information.

Newsweek has listed the products impacted below, based on information from the store’s official website.

Newsweek also contacted Publix Super Markets for comment via email on Tuesday.

Why It Matters

Publix stores can be found across eight states in the Southeast, including Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia, meaning millions could be affected by a recall affecting the chain.

What To Know

According to the store’s website, two recalls affected products on Publix Super Market’s shelves in February.

Genova Canned Tuna Products

A post on February 10 stated that select canned tuna brands were pulled from shelves due to concerns about contamination that could cause potentially deadly food poisoning.

The recall was initiated voluntarily by Tri-Union Seafoods “out of an abundance of caution” due to a manufacturing defect that could weaken the product’s seal over time, potentially leading to leaks or, more seriously, contamination with clostridium botulinum—a bacteria that can cause serious illness.

Consumers were warned not to use the product, even if it did not look or smell spoiled.

While the products impacted were distributed to multiple stores under varying labels, the affected items sold in Publix were:

  • Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil 4-Pack (Best if Used By Date: 12/13/2027; 01/21/2028)
  • Genova Solid White Tuna in Olive Oil (Best if Used By Date: 12/12/2027)

According to a release published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the products affected by the recall were sold at stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Live Shell-on Oysters

A February 6 post noted that a recall of oysters harvested in Louisiana’s oyster harvesting Area 3 since January 2010 had been ordered by the state’s department of health due to reports of norovirus-like illnesses.

The recall included shucked, frozen, breaded, post-harvest processed and oysters for the half-shell market.

The post on Publix’s website gave the following description of the products affected:

  • Live shell-on oysters in the fresh seafood display case (GTIN: 29697000000, Best-by Date: 01/10/25 – 02/04/25)

According to the post, 15 people became ill after eating oysters harvested from the area in question at several restaurants in New Orleans. Two people were hospitalized, but later discharged.

Store locations where the oysters were available were not specified in the post.

What Happens Next

Customers concerned about product recalls can stay updated by checking alerts from the retailer and the FDA. They can also usually reach out to the manufacturer if they have any questions.

Newsweek has previously compiled a list of recalls affecting Publix stores as of January 21.
