There are grave fears for a possible missing surfer after a board was found floating in the water at a remote beach east of Esperance on Western Australia’s south coast shortly after a shark was seen in the area.

Police received a call about a surfer in distress at Wharton Beach in Cape Le Grand National Park about 12.10pm on Monday.

“A surfboard has been located floating in the water but no surfer has been sighted,” a police spokeswoman said.

“A shark was sighted in the area a short time prior, and beachgoers left the water.

“At this time it is unclear what has occurred and if a surfer is missing.”

Ambulances are rushing to the scene, with a St John WA spokeswoman confirming two crews had been dispatched to Condingup, which is about an hour’s drive east of Esperance.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed it was investigating a “shark bite incident” at Duke of Orleans Bay after being alerted about 12.25pm.

More to come.
