A Texas husband was fatally shot in front of his wife and sister following a bust-up after a softball game – with his family claiming racial slurs were being hurled at him before he was gunned down.
Jarmon Mattix, a dad of three, was shot following a dispute that started during a softball game in Humble, Texas, on Sunday, and spilled into the parking lot.
It’s unclear what sparked the dispute, which involved two groups of people, but it led to four people being shot, Sidney Miller, a Harris County homicide detective sergeant, told reporters, and children were among the witnesses.
CDL truck driver Mattix, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene – with his sister, Destiny Williams, revealing that his wife, and his mother-in-law were among those injured, KPRC reported.
“[The shooter] shot my brother right in front of me and my mother,” she said.
“My sister-in-law was on top of him, trying to give him CPR.”
Cops were unable to confirm Mattix’s relationship with the injured victims, whose injuries are non-life-threatening.
An unidentified man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting are still being probed, but Mattix’s family have alluded to racism.
Williams has claimed she heard the shooter and another man hurl “different racial slurs” at her older brother before he was gunned down.
“My brother was targeted and it’s just a devastating situation we’re in right now,” she told KPRC.
“My brother… didn’t have [a criminal] record. It’s the fact… sometimes being black, it can happen like that.”
Investigators have not confirmed if the shooting had racial undertones – but it “will be looked into,” Harris County Sheriff, Ed Gonzalez, said, branding the violence “senseless.”
But an incandescent Williams has urged cops to “do [their] job.”
“Black. Brown. White. Blue,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. We all are people.”
Cops had identified two suspects but it’s unclear if charges have been filed.
