A Sydney teacher has been charged with possessing child abuse material after being arrested at school.

Sex crimes squad detectives on Friday arrested Amity College year 2 teacher Matthew David Eagleton, 54, at the school’s Auburn campus.

Detectives seized and searched Eagelton’s phone and laptop, allegedly finding child abuse material. A small amount of cannabis was allegedly found in his car. He was taken to nearby Auburn police station and charged with several offences, including possessing child abuse material with intent. The charges do not relate to any of Eagleton’s students.

Eagleton was granted conditional bail on Saturday and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on August 18.

Eagleton’s bail conditions require him to report to police once a week and prohibit him from entering any school or centre for children under 16 as part of his bail conditions.

A staff member at Amity College Auburn said that Eagleton was absent on Monday.

The NSW Education Standards Authority, which accredits teachers, has been contacted for comment.

Amity College is an independent educator with several campuses across western Sydney and the Illawarra. Its senior school charges annual tuition fees of up to $8230, according to its website.
