Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has defended his council’s record in maintaining the Story Bridge, likening it to an “old car”.

The bridge’s footpaths remain closed, after they were suddenly shut on March 5, and a report has revealed the bridge requires an extensive and expensive restoration – or it may need to be closed by 2045 and demolished.

In a video posted on Instagram, Schrinner said he’d seen a few comments from people asking about maintenance.

“Well, this is a question we put to the expert independent panel just recently, and their response, absolutely we’ve maintained the bridge well,” he said.

“What we’re doing now though, is moving to a new stage, and just like with an old car that you maintain, or an old house that you’re maintaining, there’s a point where it needs to be restored and rebuilt, and we’re at that stage for the Story Bridge.

“It’s over and above maintenance.”

Schrinner said he was asking for federal and state support, as only 3 per cent of tax dollars went to council.
