Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce has dismissed claims his failure to land a spot on the front bench was about generational change.

The now backbench MP also said he contacted Sussan Ley in a bid to get the Coalition back together after it briefly split from the Liberal Party earlier this month.

“It’s not about generational change. There are people who are older than me now,” he told Channel Nine’s Today show.

“I’m 58 I’m not 103. The people in their 50s, that’s basically all of them. Kevin Hogan’s older than me. I’ve got no problems with that.”

“It’s not generational change, it’s politics and personalities … Let’s be straight.”

He also offered his own analysis that it would be difficult for the Nationals to maintain party unity.

“[I am a] little bit disappointed that I think everybody in the cabinet [has voted] for David.

“That’s hard to bring back unity because you’re going to have some more authority over every corner of the room, and that’s difficult.”

He said as a backbencher he was focused on fighting the net zero policy.

“I am more worried about how I look after the people of New England, and how I fight this net zero because your power prices, especially if you’re in New South Wales, that go up nearly 10 per cent.”
