Former Bachelorette lead Katie Thurston has Stage 4 cancer. The latest diagnosis came after doctors noticed spots on Thurston’s liver. The reality star shared the news in a candid social media post on Friday, March 28.
“After days of waiting, unfortunately, I did find out today that my breast cancer has spread to the liver. It is fairly small, however it does put me at stage four,” the 34-year-old said in a video shared on Instagram. “I know stage four can sound very scary, and it can be. However, given that I am triple positive and the spots on my liver are fairly small and detected early, I feel very optimistic on my outcome.”
Thurston, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in February, will begin chemotherapy on Friday, April 4.
Many people took to the comments section of Thurston’s post to share positive outcomes after such a serious diagnosis.
“Stage 4 is not a death sentence. I’m thriving and living as normal as before. You got this,” one person wrote.
“Both my aunts survived stage 4 very advanced cancers and both have been in remission [for] for 25+ years. You got this,” someone else said.
“You’ve got this Katie. Someone told me it would be the hardest year of my life, but it will give me back the rest of my life. Your positivity will be the backbone of it all, sending so much love!!” a third comment read.
Thurston also has the support of her husband, Jeff Arcuri, whom she married in March. The couple, who got engaged prior to Thurston’s cancer diagnosis, decided to tie the knot ahead of her treatment.
“I just also want to be able to be in the hospital with her and just be like, ‘My wife’s in there,'” Arcuri told Us Weekly in an interview published on March 23. “There’s more power to that. And I don’t want to be not with you for any of this.”
Thurston first appeared on season 25 of The Bachelor before inking a deal to hand out roses on season 17 of The Bachelorette. Though she did get engaged on the finale, her relationship with Blake Moynes didn’t last.
