Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will, from next month, be paid more than US President Donald Trump after the Remuneration Tribunal boosted federal politicians’ pay by 2.4 per cent.

The decision, which takes effect on July 1, lifts Albanese’s salary from $607,500 to $622,071.

That means he will now overtake Trump, who is paid $US400,000 ($614,175) for his presidential duties.

The pay rise, revealed today, is lower than the 3.5 per cent increase granted by the Fair Work Commission (FWC) for minimum wage earners earlier this month.

In its justification, the tribunal said it had taken account of economic conditions, past and projected movements in pay in the private and public sectors, and the FWC’s decision.

“This adjustment reflects a measured approach, balancing the need for restraint given economic conditions with the recognition of the upward pressure on household costs since the Tribunal’s 2024 review,” it said.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ salary will hit $448,609 while Opposition Leader Sussan Ley’s pay will rise from the $432,253 figure previously received by her predecessor Peter Dutton, to $442,627.

Politicians who do not hold senior positions, will see their pay reach $239,258.

MPs will sit in the House of Representatives for fewer days this year than any other in the past two decades, spending just 40 days this year passing laws. That’s two weeks less than the average of 48 sitting days during previous election years.
